ODAP, a neurotoxin (神經毒素) in grass pea (草豌豆).
Back in 1994, I spent more than two months climbing peaks and solo backpacking in Alaska. "Into the Wild" ( "荒野求生" 或 "阿拉斯加之死" ), the story of Chris McCandless, was a big hit at that time. Almost every Alaskan I talked to have read or heard of his story. Exactly how this young man died in a self-imposed survival situation remained a mystery. Twenty years later, this mystery is solved. Chris McCandless ate too much grass peas. The toxin, ODAP, in the peas weaken him to the extent that he could neither hunt nor forage for food. By the time he straved to death, his 30 Kg body had no fat in it.
You can read about this story at the references I listed below. Jon Krakauer, the author of "Into the Wild" also wrote "Into Thin Air" ("巔峰"), the story of the 1997 Mt. Everest Disaster, this tragic story is close to the hearts of every mountaineers.
