英文 tampon 源自法文 tampion = 塞子。
英文 tamponade: 用棉塞去塞著傷口，或對身體一部份加壓，例如在創傷通常聽到「心包填塞」英文就是 cardiac tamponade。
如果是用來止血， 請記得在棉料上用「瞄準直接加壓法」。因為這些衛生棉料和止血敷料一樣是對血液有吸收性，如果只敷在傷口上而不加壓，這是「嗍血」而不是止血 ( http://www.hkcvst.org/forum/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=32&extra=page%3D1 ) 。
下圖前額上的一塊是 "Tampad" ，一樣可以用來瞄準加壓止血 :-)
當然在止血和清潔傷口後，這些棉料也可以是敷料的代用品 。
